Pappo's Blues "Vol.7" was released in 1978, right before Pappo moved to live in England, where he stayed up to the early 80s, and where -weirdly- he was part of a reformed Motörhead line up during some weeks (a legend says).
In London he started a band with the Black Sabbath roadies called Monster Feet, the anecdote comes from some huge pantoufles Pappo bought which had "toes", like gloves for feet.
Well, this "Vol.7" was originally intended to be a live album, at least that was the intention of Pappo and bassist Alejandro Medina, some tapes from live shows were recorded, but the quality was so poor that they declined the idea.
Finally the LP consisted of studio takes, basically old Pappo's Blues tunes, revamped for the occasion, with a rawer sound, and a couple of new tracks, namely "Detrás de la iglesia" & "El jugador", which were erroneously issued without the vocal tracks...the album was pressed and released in a hurry by Music Hall, and both tracks stayed "as is", like instrumentals forever: they were not instrumentals.
The old songs' versions sound considerably stronger, heavier and more saturated than the original ones, that old Jimi Hendrix trick, getting the strings out of tune while playing, it was abusively used here, with dirty and quite heavy riffs.
I think that "Vol.7" contains -like most of the 70s' Pappo- some experimental and trippy detail, where the blues are used like a minimal vehicle to construct evil and brief vignettes, many times the weird production of the albums accentuated certain psychedelic feel which, perhaps, was unintentional; for instance, the production and the mix of this 7th record is a bit strange, not bad, although the final result smells like an unfinished task, which had an anticipated release.
Musically this album is quite fine, especially the fucked up version of "El viejo" (original from 1971), including a Pappo's killer slide guitar job with his Gibson Les Paul, "Tema 1" (aka "Hay tiempo para elegir" aka "Castillo de piedra"), another 71's tune, also recorded by Luis Alberto Spinetta in his 1st solo album, and "Gris y amarillo", song that features a hoarse Pappo on vocals.
The weird production is especially noted in the Darío Fernández drums, and some details of the mix, which are clearly revealed on the CD issue; a fun album, perfunctorily released by a company that seemed to be pushed for time, and the last Pappo's Blues record, at least up to the 90s.
Gracias Bob nuevamente!
