Skaldowie, a Cracow, Poland, rock group, was particularly popular from the 1960s to the 1980s. With their musical training and proximity to the folklore-rich area of Podhale, many of their tracks were a fusion of rock, folk, and classical music.Wikipedia
Skaldowie formed in 1965 in Kraków (Cracow). Its founding members Andrzej and Jacek Zielińskis' maternal grandparents hailed from Zakopane in the High Tatras, and both boys enjoyed spending time there and hiking in the mountains. Many of their compositions included references to folk music from the region. Skaldowie caused a stir in 1972 with the extent to which motifs from the Goral music of Podhale featured on their groundbreaking album Krywań, Krywań (Kriváň is a mountain on the Slovak side of the High Tatras). Its 18-minute title track, labeled a "suite" on the album cover, was a fusion of rock, folk, and classical music with quotations from works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Alexander Borodin, Modest Mussorgsky, Gioachino Rossini, and others.[1] The lyrics, although credited as a folk song, were actually from the folkloric poem "Kriváň, High Kriváň!" ("Krywaniu, Krywaniu wysoki!") by Kazimierz Przerwa-Tetmajer published in 1903.[2]
Between 1966 and 1980 they received numerous national awards and were one of the most popular musical groups in Poland.
Esto nos comenta Bob sobre la banda:
Polish band Skaldowie was founded in 1965 in Cracow by former members of group Sekstet Krakowski. In the early years of the group, a diverse music interest of each of the member result in fabulous music variety, from simple songs enriched by baroque, renaissance or music of 20 s, through pieces full of rhytm'n'blues and Polish folk music.
A trip to the USA and purchase of new musical instruments, among other the legendary Hammond's organs, played en essential role as pointed out by the band itself in their interviews and by their biographers . Fascinated by the new instrument, the band leader, Andrzej Zielinski decided to refer the band works toward the progressive rock. The LP's "Od wschou do zachodu słońca" and "Ty" clearly demonstrate band's search for new directions within then Polish music. Despite these attempts their songs remained still dominated by pop music.
The band after a few years break entered in May 1972 a studio to record enough music for two LP's. One of them is "Krywań, Krywań". This LP was a with huge surprise to a lot of Skaldowie fans. Already the very first notes of the title suite (as long music songs were named what always led to outrage by the musical purists) were announcing a new unknown until then, music. The guitar riff intensified by both violin and organs and then garnished by highlands music. This was followed by musical "slalom", full of quotations from folk, jazz and classical music. One has the impression to listen to Jon Lord's or Keith Emerson's style. But by his minor coquette Andrzej Zieliński delivers
evidence of his identification with mainstream rock.
There four other songs on this LP that have similar construction but individual features. "Fioletowa dama" is an instrumental piece where both Zieliński brothers, Andrzej and Jacek, as well as Jerzy Tarsiński demonstrate their talents to improvisation. One encounters sound close to
Latino-American rock along typical Polish folk melodic line in the piece "Juhas zmarł". "Gdzie mam ciebie szukać" is dominated by guitar riff and fantastic improvisation by Tarsiński. "Jeszcze kocham" is the only song that deserves to be considered as hit. Despite its perfection this
LP was not fully accepted by the music market and little by little disappeared form the market. This is surprising particularly as this LP turned an export article of this band.
In 1973, songs from the album "Krywań, Krywań" were recorded and re-appeared in the two neighboring countries, the GDR (East Germany Democratic) and the USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics).
Published here compilation Skaldowie - Out Of Poland, of Wydawnictwo 21 of 1999, contains alternate or live versions of songs known from the LP "Krywań, Krywań", two versions of the title track, 22:07 minute version of the Russian disc and 19:53 minutes of the GDR disc, both performance differs years of recording and a slight change of musical material, two versions of song "Juhas zmarł", songs "Gdzie mam ciebie szukać" and "Jeszcze kocham" and sung in German song "Heidelbeeren".
Been issued 500 copies of this CD, and only so much meant to be from the very beginning (just see the numbering, which is on the cover). I will add that this CD will never not be resumed, so today has become a "white crow". A disc is really great!
Y acá un video para que puedan escucharlos antes de decidirse hacerse con este disco...
Que lo disfruten...
